L is a pancake

today was a heavy day, i feel low, i feel dark…it was like there was a strong storm coming for me or an immense battle i don’t know. i hate myself today for being not me, for being not tough and domineering. where the hell my old self-gone?

oh goodness, what i am writing in here. i promise to write only things that pleases me okay but i will be a hypocrite if i won’t say it now. i am terribly weak of things that happened today. i cannot be the hard person i would always want to be…i have a soft heart, which i hate right now!

are you soft like this too?

Twister night

Last night before Oliver and I went home from work, I asked him to drive at KFC Liberty Center for a light dinner. And being lazy and tired I settled for their new product – the Twister! Oliver had a fully loaded meal, which we shared.

filling but nothing extra ordinary for me...

We call the night early, still a happy Friday for us!

Reporter's Notebook talks about dog killing

Last night I was horrified while watching Reporters' Notebook on GMA7. One of their show's highlight was “Death Sentence for Dogs”. That in some provinces down south dogs are sentenced to death through gas chamber. According to some government officials they are threatened about the rabies spread to human nevertheless; really, I don’t find these acts acceptable and humane. Being a dog lover I highly opposed these practices. They are so mean! I hope they will not find themselves being a dog on their next life!

I googled earlier about this activity in Mindanao and found a related post. Read more…

Dogs are easy to kill
By Annabelle L. Ricalde

FIRST, there were loud yelping and barking as the steel cage was slid into the gas chamber made of wood and hard flex sheets. An employee of the City Pound Office quickly mounted the chamber and locked its door. Another worker inserted a six-meter long black hose into a hole on top of chamber.

At his signal, the engines were started and steady steam of black smoke streamed into the hose and then to the chamber.

In 40 minutes, the yelping and the barking ceased: The dog was dead.

In this city of man, dogs, his best friend, are put to death by gassing, electrocution or simply by drowning them in a drum full of water.

Dr. Allan Blanco, city pound officer of the City Veterinary Office, said two dozens of stray dogs are exterminated to prevent a rabies epidemic from breaking in Cagayan de Oro. Philippines currently ranks fourth worldwide in incidence of the rabies disease and is increasing, despite government promises to rid the country of the problem by 2020.

In 1998, 362 Filipinos died of rabies, compared with 321 in 1997 and 337 in 1996. About 10,000 dogs are believed infected with the disease each year. Figures for rabies death in Cagayan de Oro are unavailable. City Health personnel have refused to provide the figures to Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro citing the confidentiality of the information. But in Butuan City, rabies deaths caused by dog bites have left 70 people in Caraga Region since 2002 up to now, the regional office of the Department of Health (DOH) said. Blanco said most of the dogs they exterminated are strays after they were abandoned by their owners.

Carbon monoxide poisoning "Next to lethal injection, death by carbon monoxide is one of the humane ways to kill a dog," Blanco told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro. He said the use of carbon monoxide is also affordable for the cash-strapped City Veterinary office. The City Veterinary office adopted the use of carbon monoxide early this month after Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro published a picture showing a dog being drowned to death in a drum of water. Prior to carbon monoxide poisoning, employees used wooden poles with ropes to string the dogs around their necks. The dogs were then lowered into the drums until they die. The City Veterinary office also experimented by electrocuting the dogs, according to Dr. Perla Asis, City Veterinary Officer. Asis said they are experimenting with various ways to exterminate stray dogs inexpensively because the City Government provided its office with enough money. Most of these experiments are done on dogs, she said. She assured they conducted the experiment in accordance to the Animal Welfare Act of 1998. Blanco, for his part, denied they tried electrocuting the dogs. "The plan did not push through, " he said. Still, a leading private veterinarian practitioner, Dr. Lorna Jamis said subjecting dogs to carbon monoxide poisoning, drowning and electrocution are cruel deaths for these animals considered to be man's best friend. Jamis said these methods do not cause instantaneous death and the dogs will still suffer. She urged the City Veterinary office to follow the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 when they terminate the dogs. Section 6 of Animal Welfare Act of 1998 said the killings of dogs, cattle, pigs, goats, sheep, poultry, rabbits, carabaos, horses, deer and crocodiles " shall be done through humane procedures at all times." It said "humane procedures shall mean the use of the most scientific methods available as may be determined and approved by the Committee on Animal Welfare" which will be composed by representatives of the Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Interior and Local government (DILG), Department of Education (DepEd), Culture and Sports (Decs), Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI), National Meat Inspection Commission (NMIC), Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA), Philippine Animal Hospital Association of the Philippines (Paha), Philippine Animal Welfare Society (Paws), and Philippine Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA). The Welfare Act of 1998 also said it shall be unlawful for any person to kill or torture any animal using methods not authorize by the committee. Killings can be made, the law said "if it is done as part of the religious rituals of an established religion or sect or a ritual required by tribal or ethnic custom of indigenous cultural communities; when the pet animal is afflicted with an incurable communicable disease as determined and certified by a duly licensed veterinarian ;) When the killing is deemed necessary to put an end to the misery suffered by the animal as determined and certified by a duly veterinarian; When it is done to prevent an imminent danger to the life or limb of a human being; and When done for the purpose of animal population control.

Lethal injection "For me, lethal injection is the best humane procedure because there is no struggle of the dog," Jamis told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro. Jamis said with lethal injection, death would be instantaneous to the animals and would not subject them to pain. She said the City Veterinary office can use Pentobarbital, a short-acting barbiturate, and used in other countries for human euthanasia. "It put the animals to sleep until they are overcome with death. There is no struggle," Jamis said. Dr. Alfonso Ramosa, Misamis Oriental veterinary officer shared the same view with Jamis, saying lethal injection is the most humane way of putting away animals. But she said this method is very expensive and not all local governments can afford it. A 50cc of Pentobarbital cost about P4, 000, according to Jamis. Republic Act 9482 otherwise known as "Anti-Rabies Act of 2007" signed into law last May 25, 2007, specifies euthanasia as the method to be use for the "painless death to Dogs and other animals." The City Veterinary Office bury the dead dogs at the landfill area in Zayas, Barangay Carmen until they found out that some unscrupulous persons dug the graves and ate the animals. Asis said they stopped burying the dogs at the landfill area and persuaded the Department of Environment of Natural Office in Malasag, Barangay Malasag to accept the carcasses. "Nauyonan nga dalhon didto ang gipangpatay nga mga dogs aron himoon nga fertilizer sa mga kahoy," Asis said.

Rabies. The City Veterinary Office is in the forefront of the war against rabies disease. Senator Pia Cayetano, chair of the Senate health committee, said 300 to 400 Filipinos die every year needlessly of a most dangerous yet most preventable disease. "They are part of the 115,223 people all over the country who were victims of dog bites. This translates to around 316 individuals bitten by a dog every day or 13 victims every hour in 2005. The number may even be bigger considering that many people who get bitten by dogs fail to seek treatment because of the high cost entailed, ranging from P5,000 to P30,000," Cayetano said. Unlike the Philippines, the countries of Antigua, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Fiji, Finland, Guam, Hawaii, Iceland, Ireland (Republic of), Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla, St. Lucia, St. Martin (Netherlands Antilles), St. Pierre et Miquelon Islands, St. Vincent, Sweden, Taiwan, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), and Uruguay are considered rabies free. "The underlying problem is that public awareness of the disease remains poor and that dog owners are not taking up the offer of subsidized rabies immunizations," according to Dr. Jose Abella, director of the Department of Health's Communicable Disease Control Service in his published study. Another expert, Dr. Mary Elizabeth Miranda, head of the rabies research program at the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) said: "surveillance of rabies, particularly in Asia, is inadequate and not given priority compared with other infectious disease like tuberculosis and malaria," deplores Dr. Miranda. Dr. Thiravat Hemachudha, a neurology professor at the Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand told a forum: "there is no political commitment towards rabies prevention and control. Unreliable data are related to limitations in diagnostic laboratories and the complexity of disease manifestations." Dogs may be infected with rabies virus in either the "furious" or the "dumb" form. Furious rabies is characterized by agitation and viciousness, followed by paralysis and finally death. "The animal's inability to swallow caused drooling of saliva," explains Dr. Jude Alon, a veterinarian working with the Mindanao Baptist Rural Life Center (MBRLC). In dumb rabies, paralytic symptoms predominate and are manifested by a dropped lower jaw, Dr. Alon said. He added that a dog afflicted with rabies "changes personality." This means a previously friendly dog becomes reclusive; a shy dog, aggressive. Victims of dog bites in dangerous sites such as the head, neck, face, fingertips and back should immediately be given rabies vaccine. "The nearer the site of the bite to the brain, the faster the movement of the virus," Dr. Alon said. "Ninety-five percent of rabies is from dog bites while the rest are from food such as animal liver and brain," said Senator Juan Flavier when he was still the health secretary. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed RA 9482 otherwise known as "Anti-Rabies Act of 2007" last May 25, 2007. The "Anti-Rabies Law specifies euthanasia as the method to be use for the "painless death to Dogs and other animals." The law also instructed the Department of Health (DOH) to "ensure the availability and adequate supply of pre-qualified human anti-rabies vaccine in animal bite treatment centers at all times. It also instructed the DOH to provide Post-Exposure Treatment at the minimum expense to individuals bitten by animals suspected of being rabid which will consist of the initial vaccine and immunoglobulin dose." Still people rely on remedies like garlic or "tandok" (suction, using carabao horn or animal bone) in treating dog bites. "The rabies virus allows no survivors, and the victim dies a slow, horrible death. If you "survived" a dog bite, it was because the dog was not rabid in the first place," a health expert said.

where to Trick or Treat?

In less than two weeks, it’s going to be Halloween and together with this celebration, it’s time for the kids to dress up in funny and creepiest costumes. Che had already bought a Batman suit for little Pao while we are both thinking if Sam would still to join this event. You see Sam is quite big for her age now and she may not likely fit those kiddie costumes :)

About last year’s Trick or Treat, we joined that in Glorietta and Boni High Street. The kids were so happy because they got a pumpkin full of goodies. And this year, we are still finalizing where to bring the kids. There would be one in Market Market and another one in Mall of Asia. I will be checking Boni High Street over the weekend.

For those interested to bring along their kids to this event, you may find the additional info below.

Lovin' Charles & Keith

Recently had my second pair of Charles & Keith that is after I beg Oliver to buy me these cute and stylish sandals last two week’s ago. Since I already gave up my obsession to my Schu collections, I can now start my shoebox collection of C&K. Too expensive, lol! Oh! I have a friend going to Malaysia in November I would definitely ask her to look for cheaper C&K and then shop for me too…yey!

I am not forgetting my Aldo fascination still :)

Sunday concluded on a Sale!

Sunday is rest day for us (Oliver, L, & Bea). More sleep, decent meal and playtime with our Bea. Early evening we went to Robinsons Supermarket (Pioneer) to buy stocks for the next two weeks –canned goods, instant noodles, toiletries, etc. Then had an hour to shop at Megatent. I wish I had plenty of time to pick and fit items on huge discounts. Oliver and I settle for a new pair of Levi’s jeans at 50% and I score a nice Giordano top (black stripes turtleneck, which will be perfect for the coming cold season).

Definitely an awesome weekend had passed :)

Saturday brunch is Pasta

Saturday, our brunch was left over from the fridge. We had pasta with flaked tuna and brazo for dessert. I decided to spend the whole day at home instead of haggling at the mall for the season sale while Oliver went to work in the afternoon. It was a day for me to rest.

Salamat sa Diyos!

this is Che's cooking not mine :)

Friday night is Dimsum

Feasted on dimsums last Friday night after a few rounds at the Flood Sale in Greenhills Shopping Center. Oliver got a surf tee inspired for P150.00 and I got nothing... oh! and he needed to buy me a brand less flip-flop last minute because I don't want to walk around with my Charles & Keith sandals :)

going away for good...

Zanne’s last day at the office was wind up with a mini salo-salo we discretely prepared.

It was an evening of laughter and all pure fun even if it means that someone is leaving soon.

Btw, dinner went through with a big bilao of Pancit Malabon, pork BBQ and lumpiang shanghai all from Amber Golden Pot.

And a rush cake from Goldilocks, which everyone enjoyed.

We all wish you nothing but good luck on your new job and see you around ZANNE!

Free now...

A week ago my Ninang Elo died and six days after she was laid to rest.

She had a very good fight with her illness. She was very strong all through out her battle. And I know she is happy now, free from illness, free from worries, and peacefully resting while watching all of us.

During her burial last Sunday an hour necrological was given to her by her colleague in her teaching job. There were people who had their message and last farewell. One of her co-teacher and friend told everyone how she met her husband (Papa Nopes to us). It was how my Ninang considered her soon-to-be husband as her soul mate. A courtship ended on a wedding date. Papa Nopes was the last one to give his message. It was brief yet meaningful, he sent thank you to everyone who went to the wake.

At the end of services, there was an AVP presentation of her old photos, mostly during her teaching days. It was a very touching moment. The song I am Free will be memorable from now on.

L-R: Tita Bebot, Tita Gie, Nanay & Tita Josie

Right after the necrological, the mass was offered. It was overwhelming to see many people attended her burial and offered flowers and prayers. Then it was teary when the mass ended, all of us knew that in a few more minutes we could no longer see her. Jorrel, my cousin Jojo’s 7 yr old son, was crying hard when it was time for us to say goodbye.

Ninang Elo was laid to rest at The Romans Memorial Garden. She will be missed…

L-R: L, Rheena, Che, Che (Jojo's wife), Irish

L, Che, Jeck & Jojo

with our Ina

The lighter side, in some way it turned out to be a reunion of our families. After the funeral, we all gathered at their family house for a short chitchat.

Ina and Nanay

Finally, the day ended, it was tiring…and I know there’s one person who needs a lot of sleep – my Nanay.

Travelling North (contest entry...)

It was a blessing that I married someone who likes road trip, dining out and the beach of course. Another blessing is his being Ilocano had brought me to most cities and towns of the Ilocos region. And every year I look forward on visiting my in-laws, partly visit new places, and discover something unique about the place. Our travel period mostly falls on or before holy week, which is perfect because we can enjoy a longer weekend and the scorching heat of the sun.

This year one of our stop is at surfing capital of the north, which is San Juan, La Union. Though surfing was very new to us, my husband did not waste time and tried his Surfing 101 from La Union folks. He paddles and ride as many waves as he can. By the way, surf lesson is available at San Juan Surf Resort at Php400.00 fee for the surf instructor and rental of surfboard and Billabong Surf School does group session headed by none other than the surf hunk and guru, Luke Landrigan. On the other side, I enjoyed the big waves. It was cool being slapped by the powerful waves. I enjoyed much that laid-back atmosphere, the clean coastline and the nice people. I admire how the Green Zinc movement maintained the surfing ground.

Accommodation is not bad, San Juan Surf Resort and Sebay Surf Central offers affordable, homey and clean cottages. Standard Room range from P1,200.00++ and villas to Php1,400.00++. And there’s this Midway Grill at Carlatan, fairly five minutes drive, which offers delicious breakfast to dinner.

How can you go wrong with the ultimate serving of omelette and fresh catch from the sea? It was so filling! Budget starts at P110.00++ for breakfast and P150.00++ for lunch and dinner.

Another remarkable stop this year was at Candon City. It was for my search of Marsha’s delicacies that drove us at this city. Marsha’s branches are at Bantay and Vigan Ilocos Sur respectively and going further north was not on our itinerary that time, so, it was our convenience to find this red box goody at the heart of Candon.

Marsha has known for its bibingka and super moist brownies and my family and friends love these as “pasalubong”, who doesn’t anyway? A box is priced at Php120.00-P140.00

Going around Candon City was another first for us. We made a short visit at St. John Sahagun Parish, which is one of the many Ilocos church with such great architecture. And then, we started our search for authentic Ilocano cuisine. Though I did a little research of this place, I had very little info and some online suggestions were Café Bossa, Bistro Candon and Twinkle’s Restaurant. We initially checked for Twinkle’s but I was not so impressed of the home-cooked favorites they offer. We were supposed to check Café Bossa but it was a little distant so we opted to go to Bistro Candon and dine. Bistro Candon offers genuine Ilocano cuisine says their menu book. The good thing is the have my husband’s all time favorite popular Ilocano dish – Sinanglaw.

For all you know, Sinanglaw is made of innards and skin of cow or carabao or goat (to some areas) sautéed in onion, ginger, garlic, peppercorns and moderate amount of cow’s bile for the bitter taste. Wayback in Manila, this dish is very near to “papaitan”. Another dish we ordered was Bagnet, which is deep-fried and characterized by its crispy skin. Again, it was a very filling meal and I would love to go back to taste the rest of the flavorful IIocano dishes soon.

Back to my husband’s hometown in Tagudin, Ilocos Sur I enjoyed the rest of our trip relaxing and embracing the countryside lifestyle.

I would always love the afternoon walk at the nearby Amburayan River; it was a perfect place to watch the sundown. And my husband would love to recall his childhood as we soak our feet on the fresh water. Though it is not very often that we travel north, I have adapted the life my husband had grew up. I enjoyed eating her sister in law’s cooking of “dinengdeng” and anything boiled and dipped in fish sauce. I heart everything about Ilocos.

Though most of the roads going to the north were badly damaged by typhoon Ondoy we are still planning a short vacay before Christmas time. It would be a short trip to Ilocos and La Union. I look forward on exploring most of La Union this time. A heavenly breakfast at Midway Grill, then this shabu shabu lunch at Kaw Bin would be perfect, and would definitely stop at Halo-Halo de Iloko and check their house cooking. There’s this Ma-Cho Temple at San Fernando, La Union, which I missed to see during our last trip. My husband is telling me how beautiful the town of Luna is. Oh my! There is so much to explore with so little time.

a family's loss...

At 6:10pm today, I received the message about my Ninang Elo’s passing away. It was my mother and cousin, Irish who send the sms and they have been witnessed today to whatever pain my Ninang had.

Ninang Elo is not only my godmother but also my Tita Elo; she is my Nanay’s eldest sister. She is one of the persons close to my heart and she is my icon of strength. For all you know, my Ninang had been fighting cancer for 3 years now. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer at stage 4 in 2006 few months after our wedding. Her first surgery happened in 2007 and had her second last year. Our thought of her recovery failed after her doctor suspected metastasis. She went to few more treatment but a major surgery was no longer recommended given her weak condition last January. It was a very painful news to everyone. And it was hard for us to see her struggle for life in her hospital bed.

Two weeks ago, we went to see her and I never suspect that it was my last meeting with her. Though she was very weak, I prayed for another Christmas for her. And remember how we (my maternal family) made her holiday last December merrier. We spent most of the occasions with her to give life and happiness to the eerie atmosphere of their family house.

Starting today, we will be missing her glamour, her being strict and generous, her stories, her smile and her cooking. Together with the rest of the family, we pray for you.

Ninang Elo, you will always be remembered…

the Sunday that was...

Today as planned, we went to MOA to attend the Pet Blessing, which was organized by PAWS. We were 30 minutes behind schedule but were caught by surprise when we arrived at the venue with no trace of any event happening anytime that day. Oliver asked the security guards and found out that it was postponed and will be held next Saturday (October 10). I was a bit disappointed with this cancellation and had a little regret of missing last night’s schedule in Boni High. I suddenly remember that Tiendesitas and Eastwood City would have the same Pet Blessing today so I asked Oliver to drive to Tiendesitas. We arrived past 1pm and instantly asked fellow dog owners about the schedule. Well, it was not really our day. The blessing was over, it was held an hour earlier. Though Eastwood City will have another schedule this afternoon, we did not take our chance. Anyway, we are now looking on the Oct 10 schedule.

Though our schedules are not so good today, I know our Bea was still happy that she was able to go out and drive around with us. And she met another lab earlier, which mom and dad was not able to get the name.

This is ??? which is 7mos only according to his human, he is very playful and adorable like Bea :)

this is dog X...

I know our girl’s excitement every time she will meet her kind, if only she could say to us if she could play longer I know she would beg us not to leave at once.

And if only I could buy more time spending times like this with her too, I would but you see Mom and Dad need to work. You know how I would always love “us” to have photos so that I can browse it repeatedly.

Oh god! I’m starting to get this dramarama over this post…hehehe. One thing is sure; Bea would always be our adorable baby.

Well, enough now. We went straight to West Rembo in Makati after that short trip to Tiendesitas. We almost forgot that it was their fiesta. We had late lunch at Manang Linda’s house (she is Oliver’s older sister).

We did not stay long because I was already sleepy and Bea is tired now. After our short good bye to Oliver’s siblings, we drive home and had a late afternoon nap.

I woke up past 7:30pm; Oliver and Bea were already downstairs. Instantly we had dinner, Bea had mechado (from Manang Linda) and we (Oliver & I) had some soft cinnamon rolls from Purple Oven, which we bought earlier.

Bought also banana loaf and assorted cafe cakes by 4, which we will consume for breakfast.

So much of this weekend for now. Work is due tomorrow and it will be another challenging week for us.

Have a splendid weekend ahead :)
